AHO reaches 300 students supported through accommodation grants

The Aboriginal Housing Office (AHO) has achieved a major milestone, proudly supporting 300 students through our Tertiary Accommodation Grant (TAG) program since July 2022.

Since TAG began, the AHO has worked with six education providers across NSW to achieve this goal. We are currently partnered with the University of Wollongong, University of Sydney and the University of Newcastle – as well as accepting applications directly through SmartyGrants.

AHO Chief Executive, Famey Williams, said, “The cost of rent shouldn’t stop our Mob from choosing to study, and our accommodation grants support students to achieve their educational goals.

“TAG is helping our future leaders studying a range of disciplines such as law, medicine, business, community services, education, science, tourism and engineering – just to name a few!

“We aren’t stopping at 300 students, and our TAG applications remain open. I encourage people to apply.”

About TAG

TAG provides funding of up to $10,000 to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students, studying a diploma or higher at TAFE or university, to offset the cost of accommodation while they study. By helping overcome barriers that might get in the way of studying or applying to study, this grant aims to improve retention rates of existing students and increase enrolment of aspiring students.

TAG is a continuing initiative under our Strong Family, Strong Communities (SFSC) Strategy, helping our future leaders concentrate more on their studies and less time on how they’re going to pay rent.
